I have written three very different biographies – of the French Revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre, the English antiquarian John Aubrey, and Napoleon. I believe biography is a form of portrait painting in words. I’m interested in finding new ways to tell the story of a life. My subjects are all historical figures and my role is to bring them back to life. I like to examine the boundaries between fact and fiction. I enjoy reading and reviewing both kinds of books.
